Lailai World (Kids Travel)

At Fiji Airways, children are special guests and we’re excited to welcome them on board, whether it’s their first flight or they’re seasoned explorers.
They’re so important in fact that we’ve created a whole world for them. Lailai is the iTaukei (indigenous Fijian) word for small, and Lailai World is the experience we have in store for our small (only in stature, definitely not in spirit and energy) guests.
Here’s what our Lailai World experience includes:
- Children’s channel on board for all their entertainment needs. Hours of complimentary movies, TV shows, games and activities will keep them entertained so that everyone has a pleasant flight.^
- Children’s meals are also available on a complimentary basis. Please request this at the time of booking.
- Lailai Kid’s activity pack – this colourful beach bag comes with a storybook that follows the adventures of our marine champions, a sticker pad, puzzle, and finger puppet.

A Tree for Every Take-Off | Fiji Airways, working with the Fijian Department of Forestry, undertakes the ‘Every Take-Off…One Tree project, where the airline plants a tree for every international take-off on its network. Fiji Airways has planted over 36,500 trees in Fiji over the past two years. The overwhelming majority of these have been mangrove trees – the unsung heroes of coastline protection. Mangroves are also the best sequesters of carbon, sequestering 4 times more carbon than rainforests. They are critically important in the fight against greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. Fiji Airways will plant another 15,000 mangroves this year, bringing the total of planted mangroves to 50,000.
Onboard Service Changes for Conservation | In 2020, Fiji Airways instituted an on-board programme which will remove nearly two tonnes of plastics from our aircraft annually, and saves half a million litres of water every year, by moving to more environmentally friendly on-board products. This includes replacing plastic meal tray sets with environmentally friendly packaging, eliminating the need to wash trays and rotable items. Items previously wrapped individually are now bulk-packed, drastically reducing the need for large amounts of single-use plastics.
Amenity kits now use sustainable paper and wood-based packaging and products, further reducing use of plastics onboard.

FIJI AIRWAYS NEW DINING CONCEPT TAKES IN-FLIGHT CUISINE TO NEW HEIGHTS
Fiji Airways, Fiji's national carrier, has launched its inaugural in-flight Business Class menu from multi-award-winning chef Richard Cross, taking the airline’s catering to new heights with innovative cooking techniques rarely seen in commercial aviation.
Available onboard all Fiji Airways international flights, the debut Business Class menu from renowned Kiwi-Fijian Chef Richard Cross offers fine-dining techniques at 35,000 feet and includes new signature dishes such as kava and cinnamon ice cream and dehydrated vegetable garnishes. A new menu cycle will launch every quarter with molecular gastronomy and house-smoked produce set to feature on upcoming menus.
Business Class passengers can now enjoy gourmet meals such as grilled tiger prawn cutlets with sriracha mayo and crispy noodles on a caramelised pineapple bed, grilled aged tenderloin in a creamy peppercorn sauce and mashed potato, herb-crusted chicken breast stuffed with feta and creamy spinach, mash potato, broccoli and grilled carrot ribbonettes.
A highlight of the new in-flight dessert menu includes the signature kava and cinnamon ice cream, as well as cookies and cream banoffee parfait, and bittersweet chocolate panna cotta.
Showcasing indigenous vegetables in a new light, modern cooking and preservation techniques have been used to transform the likes of cassava, sweet potato (yellow kumala), dalo and plantain banana into edible garnishes you'd expect to enjoy in a fine-dining restaurant.
Cross will also be introducing house-smoked local produce as a regular feature on the airline’s Business Class menu, including smoked walu fish and smoked beef tenderloin.
To elevate the Business Class experience, passengers will be treated to dessert and salad dishes in bowls resembling a tanoa, traditionally used to prepare the ritual drink of kava. Fiji Airways also utilises eco-friendly Food For Thought packaging, particularly in Economy Class, which will save up to half a million litres of water a year and will remove up to two tonnes of plastics annually from onboard.
Richard Cross, Executive Chef of Fiji Airways explains, “Airline catering has its challenges but I'm looking to change that. My vision is to use cooking and presentation techniques like dehydrated vegetable garnishes, molecular gastronomy, and house-smoked produce that you would expect to see in fine dining restaurants and serve them 35,000 feet in the air.”
Cross has big ambitions for the airline. “I like to stay ahead of the curve and experiment with new ideas, so I am really excited to be able to implement a range of innovative techniques across our Business Class service,” says Cross.
Cross’ inspiration derives from his 28 years of experience as Executive Chef at various international luxury resorts and his wealth of travel across America, Europe, the Maldives and Australia. After living in Fiji for over nine years, Cross likes to champion local Fijian ingredients in creative ways and also draws on his Kiwi heritage with the inclusion of ingredients such as lamb and seafood, as well as inspiration from the classic Kiwi BBQ.
Fiji Airways Managing Director and CEO, Andre Viljoen stated, “Chef Cross and his team have created an in-flight dining experience for our Business Class guests that is equal parts phenomenal and uniquely Fijian. Our new menu is one of the dozens of ways we plan to wow our guests when we welcome them home to Fiji –– our returning flyers will love the fresh additions and new guests will certainly get the taste of Fiji they're looking for."
Cross runs regular workshops in the airline’s Aviation Academy in Nadi, Fiji, providing hands-on training for the crew to ensure they can confidently execute the new techniques. He is also working directly with the crew on board, to guarantee the finest quality is executed across all flights.
Cross was appointed Executive Chef of Fiji Airways in December 2021 to oversee all catering functions of the airline. Cross’ previous roles include Executive Chef at luxury resorts such as JA Resorts & Hotels in the Maldives, Sheraton Hong Kong, Vomo Island Resort, Radisson Blu Resort and Mana Island Resort in Fiji, Millbrook Resort Queenstown New Zealand, amongst others. FIJI AIRWAYS TAKES OFF FROM WELLINGTON AFTER TWO YEARS
Fiji Airways, Fiji’s national carrier is excited to welcome Wellington locals back on board, with the first direct flight to Fiji in over two years departing Wellington today 13 April at 12.45 pm and arriving in the South Pacific paradise at 4.35 pm.
From 13 April, Fiji Airways will be operating up to two direct flights a week from Wellington to Nadi as well as daily flights from Auckland and up to two flights a week from Christchurch to Fiji from 14 April.
Travelling to Fiji recently became easier with holidaymakers now only needing to show proof of vaccination, a negative pre-departure rapid test taken 24-hours prior, a pre-booked post-arrival rapid test and travel insurance.
Fiji Airways Managing Director and CEO, Andre Viljoen stated, "We're excited to give our Wellington-based whānau a long-awaited "bula" welcome on board after more than two years apart. While we have a special celebration planned at Wellington Airport for our guests travelling on this first flight, all of our guests can expect a special journey to our islands owed to the over 60 ways we've enhanced our service since we last flew to Wellington, from the increased baggage allowance from 23kg to 30kg in economy, the food we serve and a new way to keep our younger guests entertained onboard with our complimentary in-flight activity pack and book series.”
“Since Fiji and New Zealand reopened to each other, we've started with flights from Auckland. After a surge in enquiries and bookings from Kiwis looking to holiday in Fiji, we've resumed direct flights to Nadi from Wellington and Christchurch this week.”
“As we continue to ramp up our flight schedules across New Zealand, guests can trust our commitment to safety with our award-winning Travel Ready service, Skytrax 5-Star COVID Safety rating and the highest Hospital Grade “Diamond” certification by APEX Health and Safety,” added Viljoen.
Wellington Airport CEO, Steve Sanderson welcomes the news commenting: “Wellington Airport is extremely excited to re-launch our direct flights to and from Fiji. This route first launched in 2015 and brings tropical holidays directly to Wellingtonians’ doorstep. After years of limited opportunity for overseas travel, it is fantastic to have exciting and convenient destinations available again, and just in time for Easter and the school holidays.
“Our partnership with Fiji Airways is highly valued and we have worked hard together to re-establish this route. This forms a key part of our plans to reconnect Wellington with the world and we are looking forward to the continued recovery of international travel and tourism.”
Fiji Airports, Acting Chief Executive Officer, Isei Tudreu is thrilled with the additional flights by Fiji Airways saying: “We are excited to welcome the first flight from windy Wellington to our sunny shores in Fiji! Our friends and families can finally come home and experience our Fijian hospitality and we look forward to more flights arriving from New Zealand in the near future.”
To enhance the customer experience onboard, Fiji Airways has introduced a range of new benefits including a larger standard baggage allowance of 30kg for economy passengers on international flights, free access to a digital reading platform PressReader with over 7,000 international newspapers and magazines and, for younger passengers, the Our Ocean Our Life in-flight activity packs and book series.
Fiji Airways' new seasonal Business Class menu by the renowned Kiwi-Fijian Head Chef Richard Cross is now available onboard as well as a new suite of highly-rated international wines.
Plus, holiday starved travelers can now enjoy extra time in Fiji courtesy of the revolutionary Resort Check-in feature with Fiji Airway. Available at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa, Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort, and the Radisson Blu Resort Fiji, guests on Fiji Airways international flights can check themselves and their luggage onto the flight with boarding passes issued directly at the resort, and head straight for security when they arrive at the airport. FIJI AIRWAYS CHECK-IN OPENING & CLOSING HOURS REVERTS TO THE ORIGINAL TIMES
Fiji Airways is amending its international check-in times to its original times, with check-in counters opening three (3) hours prior to departure and closing one (1) hour prior to departure. This change will come into effect for Fiji Airways flights from April 1 2022 as Fiji and other countries require fewer entry requirements allowing for minimal documents verification at check-in.
Fiji Airways encourages all customers to arrive early to the airport or alternatively check-in online 48 hours and up until 4 hours before departure to experience a more seamless service at the airport. From 7 April, traveling to Fiji will be as easy as showing proof of vaccination, a negative pre-departure rapid test, travel insurance, and a pre-booked post-arrival rapid test.

FIJI AIRWAYS CAPS OFF "WOMEN'S WEEK" WITH LAUNCH OF HIGH-FLYER RECRUITMENT PROGRAMME FOR YOUNG WOMEN IN STEM
Fiji Airways launched a High-Flyer Recruitment Programme on Women’s Week that will offer Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) students’ full-time employment opportunities with the National Airline.
- The first two High-Flyer recipients were revealed on Friday 11 March and they are Qualified Pilot Meeral Kumar and Aircraft Engineering Maintenance graduate Ilisabeta Fifita. Both women were informed of their hiring directly by Fiji Airways Managing Director and CEO Andre Viljoen and CEO of Fiji Link Shaenaz Voss at the Fiji Airways Aviation Academy.
- Fiji Airways Managing Director and CEO Andre Viljoen welcomed the hiring of both women as the first step towards greater gender equity in STEM fields that have historically been male-dominated.
"This year’s Women's Week at Fiji Airways has been more than good optics –– it's been about opportunities. At the behest of the women of Fiji Airways, we made a commitment to increase the number of women pilots and engineers within the airline. Meeral and Ilisabeta's excellent qualifications made them each an easy choice to welcome on board to our team."
- Fiji Link CEO Shaenaz Voss says the airline wanted to work with TELS (Tertiary Education Loans Scheme) students specifically, and that both Ms. Kumar and Ms. Fifita were chosen based on merit.
“I’ve always wanted to be a pilot and turned down a computer science scholarship offer at USP once I got funds through TELS as it allowed me to achieve my dreams of becoming a pilot,” says Ms. Kumar who will join Fiji Link as a DHC-6 First Officer once she completes the additional pilot entry requirements for Fiji Link at the Fiji Airways Aviation Academy.
“I’ve been waiting patiently to return to Fiji Airways as soon as borders opened and I didn’t realise it would happen so soon so I am grateful for the opportunity,” said Ms. Fifita who was an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Graduate Trainee for Fiji Airways up until March 2020."
In wishing them well on their Fiji Airways journey Mr. Viljoen added: “We are very excited to have you join us. You aren't only breaking biases, you're shattering them. You are here because you are excellent in what you do as a pilot and an engineer. You both have voices, use them. Be strong, courageous, curious, and stand firm always.”
Both Ms. Kumar and Ms. Fifita signed their contracts immediately after they were told the good news and will start their Fiji Airways journey in April.

FIJI WELCOMES FIRST FLIGHT OF INTERNATIONAL VISITORS IN 20 MONTHS
FIJI has officially welcomed the arrival of inbound tourists from Sydney, Australia, for the first time in 20 months marking the exciting resumption of international tourism.
Fiji Airways’ first tourist flight took passengers on a special flyover of resorts in Nadi and the Coral Coast, where our beaches were lined with tourism teams offering a resounding series of Bula! to welcome our visitors.
Fiji Airways Managing Director & CEO Andre Viljoen said: “Today is a very special day as we welcome back our Aussie friends. We have been working hard since March last year to prepare for this moment and ensure our guests have the safest and most enjoyable travel experience possible. We have incorporated an award-winning new Travel Ready safety program, new in-flight entertainment for travelers of all ages, and new seat selection options to enhance comfort for the long-haul and mid-haul flights.”
Following the flyover, guests arrived at 11:25 am and were welcomed with a water salute, traditional performances, and a Fijian Government delegation led by the Hon. Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama at Nadi International Airport.
“We are absolutely excited and thrilled to be welcoming our passengers back to Nadi International Airport,” said Isei Tudreu, acting CEO of Fiji Airports.
“This is a very special moment for all of us in the aviation and tourism industry with the resumption of air travel. The spectacular welcome this morning with our warmth and hospitality echoing across the entire airport terminal has truly been a heart-warming experience for our first Fiji Airways flight.
“Nadi International Airport is one of the safest airports in the world and was only last week reaccredited under the Airport Health Accreditation for maintaining internationally recognized COVID-19 safety measures. Our priority is and will always be the health, safety, and well-being of our passengers. We have evolved our airport experience to ensure our passengers are COVID safe and at the same time have a safe and seamless airport journey.”
From Fiji’s main gateway airport, passengers were then transported to one of over 200 hotels and resorts certified by the Care Fiji Commitment Programme, which ensures these properties uphold globally benchmarked COVID-safety practices that are approved by the World Health Organization and recognized by the World Travel and Tourism Council.
Prior to the pandemic, tourism was Fiji’s largest source of employment and accounted for nearly 40 percent of the country’s gross domestic product.
“Fiji is Open for Happiness. From airline to accommodation, Fiji tourism operators and related services have worked hard to ensure and uphold internationally benchmarked COVID-safety practices, and the resumption of both domestic and international tourism is a credit to Fiji’s collective commitment for public safety, and safe and seamless travel,” said Brent Hill, CEO Tourism Fiji.
As part of Fiji’s commitment to safety, over 90 percent of the country’s eligible adult population are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and more than 700 tourism-related service providers are registered under the Care Fiji Commitment Program overseen by Tourism Fiji.
Nadi International Airport is the first airport in the South Pacific to be awarded the Airports Council International’s (ACI) Airport Health Accreditation for its Travel Safe program and national airline Fiji Airways is certified with the highest level 5-star COVID-19 Airline Safety Rating by the SKYTRAX COVID-19 Airline Safety Accreditation.
Fiji is also a recipient of the World Travel and Tourism Council’s Safe Travels stamp, which enables both business and leisure travelers to distinguish destinations around the world with health and hygiene global standardized protocols – so they can experience ‘Safe Travels’.
This first flight from Sydney was followed by two more from Sydney and Brisbane, as Fiji reopens to fully vaccinated visitors from travel partner countries, for quarantine-free travel.
