Closing of Leprosy Hospital

From 1911 to 1969, this was a leper colony staffed by Catholic nuns and many of the old hospital buildings still stand. Some 4500 patients were sheltered here including many from other Pacific Island nations.

ABOUT MAKOGAI ISLAND 

Makogai island is one of ten islands that make up the Lomaiviti Archipelago, located in the Eastern Division of Fiji.  

The island shares a figure-eight-shaped barrier reef with Wakaya Island

A set of Fijian Postages Stamps were printed in 1970, to commemorate the Closing of the Leprosy Hospital on Makogai Island, after serving the Pacific Island Nations for over 59 years.  The four stamps that made up the commemorated collection, showed pictorially the Chaulmugra Tree, two of the artworks of Semisi Maya (The Gasagasau Sea Urchins and one of his most renowned works titled the Cascade) and the final image displayed the central landmark the Makogai Hospital itself.

CHAULMOOGRA TREE 

The chaulmoogra tree, the trees oil taken from the seeds helps alleviate the pain and sores on the skin.

SEMISI MAYA 

Semisi Maya a famous Internationally recognized artist, and a former resident of the Leprosy Colony, returned to the Capital City of Suva, after being cured of the debilitating illness.  upon returning, Semisi stayed at St Elizabeth’s rehabilitation home, allowing him to slowly acclimatize to the norms of the day, this is where he took up painting.   Semisi primarily with watercolors, he could capture the living spirit of the villaged landscapes through the colors and textures he created.  A short video clip of Semisi Maya creating his amazing paintings.

Makogai is owned by the Fijian Government and was declared a Marine Protected Reserve in 1989 is now well known for its giant clam and turtle nursery.
