Introduction to Fiji Journal FJ
About Fiji Journal: FJ consists of a small team of creative storytellers who connect and inspire independent travellers around the world. We’re obsessed with travel and passionate about helping you explore your curiosity and gain a deeper understanding of Fijian culture and islands. Travel is not just an opportunity for adventure but a way of life.
David Language Barnes (CEO) (Owner): Since the start of COVID 19, we have made some important changes to the website and other platforms to enable people to find the appropriate information they require within a few clicks of the mouse. This has formed an interactive platform where people can ask questions and discuss subjects on the website, enriching the narrative and securing knowledge in one place for future reference.
‘The country symbolises the soul of every Fijian; the beaches and sands that sweep our shorelines represent our external beauty. As you slowly move inland, you discover the resilience, strength, and natural raw beauty of the mountains and waterfalls. This is the core strength that keeps us strong and admired around the world.’
Guiding Basic Principles, we follow
Powerful agents for positive change We believe your mindset, choices, and purchases can have a big impact on people and places when you travel across Fiji.
- Be curious: Treat travel as a learning opportunity, first and foremost. Keep your eyes and your mind open. Indulge your curiosity. Be brave, and find your own journey of discovery.
- Appreciate, not appropriate: Research and ask questions about a place before you go while on the road. Strive to understand and respect cultural and religious nuances and customs. Appreciate; don’t appropriate traditions from other cultures.
- Seek Meaning: Seek meaningful travel experiences and connections. Make an effort to be more than a spectator; engage and participate whenever you can. Learn a few words of the local lingo. Your efforts won’t go unnoticed, and neither will a smile.
- Share your stories: Share your stories, your expertise, and what you’ve learned. More importantly, be a good listener. Every single one of us has something to contribute. Explore the differing perspectives you encounter, and spend time trying to actively understand them.
- Tread Lightly: Choose the path less travelled and tread lightly along the way. Offset your carbon footprint, use less plastic, and make the most sustainable choice where you can. If you think somewhere is amazing, chances are future generations will too; make sure it’s there for them to experience.
- Buy Locally and Responsibly: Use your travel dollars to make a positive impact. Question where the money goes before you book; make sure the locals are benefiting from your travel choices. Buy locally and responsibly.
- Be agents of positive change: Most importantly, be an ambassador for yourself and your fellow nomads. You are more than just travellers; you are also powerful agents for positive change.
About Fiji Journal: Journey of Discovery
In this section, we are going to briefly explain how the company has evolved over the last few years. You could easily identify our business as the Beta Max of the world. Even though we produce the best products and services for the tourism industry, it is a lot harder to break the marketing barrier where people can find your resources, so the end user can benefit from the vast information and the venues in Fiji to be found and flourish.
So since the pandemic of 2019, we have been working extensively in the background, working on the website and social media platforms, forming a resource that can be accessed and added to enriching the knowledge of the locals and tourists so we can all become ambassadors of this great nation. Detailed below, we touch upon the different products our team has produced and released over the last five years.
Fiji Event Guide Magazine

Fiji Journal is the leading online Fiji events platform, with updates every day from the team. Prior to COVID-19, we released a weekly interactive events guide and distributed the resource via email and social media platforms. The company was in preliminary talks with Tourism Fiji to work alongside them to help promote the venues and the diverse events happening across the islands. Due to changes in management and priorities, unfortunately, this business relationship never came to fruition. Listed below is the Fiji Events Magazine Archive, which received over 10,000 page views per week
Mobile App – Fiji in the Palm of your Hand 2017 – 2021

This was the first phone app to be released in Fiji, and it served the tourism market extensively for 3 years prior to COVID-19, providing the tourism community with daily updates, promotions, and events with a full directory of all venues across Fiji. The app was released on the Google and Apple platforms, with quarterly updates to the software.
Facebook Groups

Fiji Journal has two Facebook community groups:
- Fiji Tourism: The Visual Storytelling Community: This is a community page for locals, tourists, and ex-pats who want to find out about local tourism news. We update this page every time we release an article on the website.
- Fiji Events Guide: With 35 000 members, this is the best resource for Fiji Events on Facebook, dedicated to promoting diverse events and venues.
Fiji Journal Pocket Guide

The journal was printed on A5 paper and had 300 pages in full colour: A 2019 study conducted in the United States concluded that consumers trust, appreciate, and understand information better when it is read on paper. One of the main reasons discovered through the study was that people shared printed information more easily.
The targeted audience for the journals varied depending on the destination, with the primary audience across the board being the tourist market. In Suva, the journal was an asset to the embassies, expats working on fixed contracts, and business meetings and conferences happening across the country at different intervals throughout the year. The journal was completely free to the end-user, avoiding any barriers.
Our intention was two-fold:
- Provide an opportunity for every venue to display their product directly to the end-user.
- To empower the tourist with information about different venues and opportunities across the full breadth of the tourism market. and then directing them to the appropriate tourist desk or online booking system.
