Great Egret
The Great Egret, distinguished by its large size, lanky stature, and long white neck, is easily recognizable with its black legs, setting it apart from other egrets. It is widely distributed and relatively common worldwide, inhabiting various shallow wetlands such as ponds, marshes, and tidal mudflats. The color of the bill varies depending on the location. Often spotted alone but occasionally forming large groups in areas abundant with food, these birds exhibit classic heron behavior, patiently stalking prey in shallow waters before swiftly striking with their sharp bills. Their diet primarily consists of fish, though they also consume amphibians, reptiles, mice, and other small animals using similar hunting techniques. Great Egrets, once hunted nearly to extinction for their plumes in the late nineteenth century, played a crucial role in sparking conservation efforts and the implementation of protective bird laws.

White Faced Heron

Pacific Reef Egret
The Pacific Reef Heron, also known as the eastern reef heron or eastern reef egret, is a heron species widely distributed across southern Asia and Oceania. It exhibits a unique non-sexual dimorphism, with individuals appearing either in a slaty grey or pure white plumage. This morphological variation, thought to be linked to camouflage, distinguishes the ‘light’ and ‘dark’ morphs within the species. Both sexes share similar appearances, with yellow-grey legs and brown beaks. In the grey morph, a narrow white stripe marks the throat and chin, while the surrounding facial areas exhibit greenish to yellow hues. Immature herons typically display browner and duller plumage.

Cattle Egret
The Cattle Egret, a relatively small snowy-white egret, is easily distinguished during breeding season by its orange crown, neck, and breast, along with similarly tinted long loose neck plumes, with the bill turning bright red, while its legs change to bright red or orange-brown.

Striated Heron
Fiji’s Mangrove Heron, a shy and generally inconspicuous species restricted to the presence of large stands of mangrove, may venture out onto adjacent mud flats and fringing reefs where it adopts its characteristic hunched-up posture, staying motionless for long periods as it waits for prey to venture close before striking with great rapidity. This heron, also known as the striated heron (Butorides striata), little green heron, or green-backed heron, is a small heron, about 44 cm tall. The Mangrove Heron builds a quite bulky nest several meters above the water, deep in mangrove forests.
