Introduction
Explore the diverse avian life of Fiji’s shorelines and wetlands, where herons, egrets, and bitterns of the Ardeidae family thrive. From the majestic Great Egret, with its striking black legs and sharp bill, to the inconspicuous yet intriguing Mangrove Heron, these avian residents inhabit various habitats across Fiji’s islands. With recorded sightings spanning from Viti Levu to Rotuma, each species, including the White-faced Heron and the Pacific Reef Heron with their distinctive plumage, contributes to the rich biodiversity of Fiji’s coastal ecosystems.
Fun Fact 1: Static Fishing
Herons, egrets, and bitterns are all part of the same family of birds known as Ardeidae. One fascinating characteristic they share is their specialized hunting technique called “static fishing.” They stand perfectly still in shallow water, patiently waiting for prey to come within striking distance. This technique requires remarkable patience and precision, making them some of the most skilled hunters in the avian world.
