As the second-largest city in Fiji, Lautoka offers fewer accommodation options compared to the capital, Suva. To assist travelers, the area has been divided into three sections: the Lautoka City Center, where hotels1 and resorts2 are located within walking distance of the city’s main attractions, including shops, restaurants, and local services; the City Outskirts, where accommodations may require a short bus, boat, or taxi ride to reach the city’s amenities, offering a balance of convenience and a more secluded environment; and Vuda and Saweni Beach, a local favorite with a pristine sandy shore just 14 minutes (9 km) from the city. Vuda Point, home to the village of Viseisei, Vuda Marina, and several resorts, is located about 20 minutes (12.8 km) from Lautoka City.

The four hotels/social clubs are all great in their own way, each providing accommodation and service for you to rest your head at night, but they are targeted at very different types of people. The Tanoa Waterfront Hotel is renowned for business travelers and families coming to the area, as it provides the expected amenities and services you would expect from a venue of this calibre. Lautoka Hotel is a mixed bag, catering for budget accommodation with dorm rooms, as well as more established and well-appointed rooms adjacent to the main building that are on par with many mid-range rooms found across the nation.

The Sea Breeze Hotel again caters to the budget traveller, offering basic facilities but everything you need for a comfortable night’s rest. The Northern Club is one of the favourites of the area because it provides apartments separate from the main complex. These are fully fitted out with all the amenities and a small kitchen, which will get you by, although you will probably never use it. The main social club has its own restaurant serving cheap alcoholic beers and local food at good prices. The social aspect is what makes this place special, as it has become one of the main hubs for locals to relax in the evening, and if you stay here, you will make friends almost instantly.

This was a surprise when I first went over to the island and is well worth the short trip, especially as it is a popular choice when the cruise liners arrive once a week, with many visitors heading over for a day excursion. If you do not mind taking a small boat over to the island, Belo Vula Resort is a great place to spend the night, and if you are in the area for a few days it can be an excellent choice, as it offers island life within a stone’s throw of the main city of Lautoka; while the boat ride means evening trips back to town are impractical, those who prefer to explore during the day can return to an idyllic retreat at night to eat, drink, and be merry, and on clear evenings enjoy the stars without the glare of the main island.

If you wish for a resort experience while still being close enough to Nadi and Lautoka, these are the options you should consider, as they are all located on the main island of Viti Levu with excellent transport links. They offer a true resort-style experience, with a range of restaurants and regularly scheduled events centred around each venue. All properties fall within the 3-star to 4-star range, reflecting the quality of facilities and services provided, and each is equally excellent in its own way.

Key Points Round-Up

There is a wide range of accommodation available in Lautoka city, each with its own distinct differences. If you are staying in Lautoka city centre, Fiji Journal’s recommendation is The Northern Club, as you can be as social or as antisocial as you like, and there is typically something happening in the main club that you can join in as and when you wish. If you want island life for a night within Lautoka, you cannot really go wrong with Belo Vula Resort, a locally run establishment that ticks all the boxes for a relaxing night or two away from the hustle and bustle, offering excellent customer service and all the necessary amenities.

If you are happy to stay a little further from the town centre via taxi or car, the areas between Nadi and Lautoka—such as Vuda and Saweni—are also great options. Vuda offers the marina restaurant where yachties gather in the evenings, as well as nearby beachside resorts, while Saweni is slightly closer to Lautoka and home to the Fiji Orchid Hotel, a wonderful addition where you are enveloped by the surrounding gardens. All are excellent choices; however, be aware that getting into town or to main activities will usually require taxi transfers, as these accommodations are set well off the main road. Walking can take around 45 minutes—I have tried it and do not recommend it. If you are comfortable with this, you are onto a winner, as everything you really need is provided.

Visitor Advisory 1: Accommodation Options in Lautoka — Listed for Due Diligence Only

There are three additional accommodation options that we are aware of in Lautoka, though they are not specifically geared toward tourists. These include Kiran Palace Motel and Backpackers, YMCA Hostel & Homestay, and RSL Hotel Lautoka. All three are within walking distance of the city center and therefore occupy a prime location. However, there are limited online reviews available, and booking platforms are virtually non-existent. Typically, these would only be considered if you found yourself in a difficult situation and had to resort to these particular choices.

We have included them in a separate article where we review them in more detail. They do not deserve to be featured in the same article as the well-established brands and world-class accommodations that prioritise hospitality, service, security, and premium amenities.We mention these options because we would not be doing our due diligence if we did not, and we feel it is appropriate to acknowledge them for completeness.
