Overview: Tavarua Island is renowned as one of the world’s premier surf destinations, offering eight different breaks that cater to all levels of surfers. Located just a short distance from the island, Cloudbreak is a world-famous left-hand barrel, known for its intensity and variety of waves ranging from 2ft to 20ft. This open-ocean reef break offers multiple barrel opportunities and is usually 4ft to 6ft, intensifying with size. Restaurants is a superior left-hander right in front of the resort’s restaurant, breaking over shallow reef. It’s smaller than Cloudbreak but offers hollow, fast, and perfectly-shaped waves in the 2ft to 6ft range, surfable at all tides depending on skill level. Tavarua Rights, on the southwest side of the island, provides a right-hand wave that ranges from playful to challenging, ideal for all levels when the wind is right and the tide is medium to high.
Kiddieland, located just off the beach in front of the restaurant, is perfect for beginners, with its playful waves ideal for family sessions. Swimming Pools, a fun right-hander, is best at low to medium tides and offers crystal-clear waters, perfect for family surf sessions. For intermediate surfers, Namotu Left, off the neighboring island, offers forgiving conditions and is perfect for improving skills. Wilkes Passage, a powerful right-hander, breaks across from Namotu and can hold size, best surfed at higher tides with northeast winds. Desperations, farther up the barrier reef from Wilkes, is a go-to spot when other breaks aren’t working, offering a reliable right and left peak that rarely disappoints, providing a good time for surfers no matter the conditions.
