Destination Overview
Pacific Harbour is only a half hour’s drive from Suva and around 45 minutes by coach. It’s an area that was originally formed in the early 1970s as a canal residential subdivision offering an alternative lifestyle to urban dwellers. With a mixture of locals and expats, it slowly developed into a unique and distinct destination for adrenaline junkies that fringed the Coral Coast and touched the historical Capital.
Beqa Island complements the Pacific Harbour adventure capital of Fiji with its world-renowned diving, surfing breaks, and sport fishing, as well as the cultural practise of Firewalking from the Fearless Fijian Goliaths. Known for its soft coral and shark diving, there are several well-established dive wrecks that have become home to many varieties of marine fauna and flora. Beqa Island has become a staple all-year-round Sport Fishing destination for the professional fishing community. With many resorts and private charters providing state-of-the-art vessels and exceptional fishing equipment. With renowned surfing breaks en pau with the world-class Cloudbreak but without the crowds, this island stands tall as a destination of high pedigree.
Getting Your Bearings
Transport
Beqa Island Charter Pickup: If you’ve booked your stay at one of the resorts on Beqa Island, they typically offer a charter service to collect you from the mainland. The charter price from Navua to your accommodation ranges from 100 to 250 FJD for the first 1-2 people, with an additional 50 FJD for each extra person. Each boat journey takes between 45 and 75 minutes one way and can normally carry up to six people. If you’re carrying luggage, dive equipment, or personal possessions for your vacation, we always recommend opting for the charter pickup from the resort. This service has been developed with a focus on providing an efficient, client-oriented experience, and the timing is arranged to suit the client’s needs.
Beqa Island Village Boat (Travel Like a Local): The Village Boat is a more nimble and cost-effective way to navigate between the islands. It operates on a fixed timetable, with departures typically in the early morning, around 6-7 a.m., and return trips between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The service runs Monday to Saturday (there is no Sunday service). The cost is approximately 50 FJD per person, one way. We must stress that the boats only operate weather permitting, so always check with your resort about the weather forecast before heading out on your journey. However, this is typically not a cause for concern.
Getting to and Around: The best way to get around Pacific Harbour is by private rental car, with a very close second place going to hiring a local taxi or taxi guide for the day. These services are very economical and offer you the opportunity to speak with a local Fijian, enriching your journey with a lot of local knowledge as you traverse the different roads. If you ask at your reception desk, they will usually have a list of established and respected companies that take pride in their profession. Once you’re familiar with the area, you could also try the local bus system. You will need to acquire a bus card, which can typically be done at your hotel reception or a local convenience shop. The bus companies across the Coral Coast and Pacific Harbour operate smaller coaches that provide first-class, frequent service to various areas on a fixed timetable.

The first option is to hire a car for a few days, which will allow you to explore all of Pacific Harbour at your own pace. We have written an in-depth, step-by-step guide that provides details on all the car rental companies and their specific requirements.

The second option is to take a Pacific Transport or Sunbeam air-conditioned coach. These run continuously every day. The ‘stopping bus’ does exactly what its name suggests, picking up anyone who waves them down from the side of the road. There are also express services available, which stop only at the major towns and tourism hubs, allowing them to stick to a tighter schedule.

If you’re looking for an adventure, you can try the Viti Mini Buses. This fast and furious ride from Pacific Harbour to Suva costs around $10 one way, while the trip to Nadi is about $20 FJD. You can flag these minibuses down at the roadside if they have space, and they always seem to manage to squeeze in one more person.

There is also a domestic airport at Pacific Harbour/Deuba (NFND | PHR) and a seaplane base, offering short domestic flights or helicopter transfers to your accommodation.
