Tiko’s Floating Restaurant
Tiko’s is a must-visit when in the capital for several reasons. The unique atmosphere, the incredible staff who are a credit to the industry, and most importantly, the food—it’s simply outstanding. When you arrive, you’ll notice the buffet cart filled with a variety of salads, dips, finger foods, and some basic fruits and beverages to get you started. My suggestion is to skip it, as these are the kinds of things you can find anywhere. While it will satisfy your hunger for a moment, it will leave little room for the main course, particularly the seafood dishes.
The restaurant also features live music, typically performed by a local musician who sits just off to the side of the staircase as you enter from the lower deck. During our visit, there was a well-known local guitarist who played a mix of classic ’80s and ’90s songs, along with some local tunes. This simple touch truly made the evening special. One thing to keep in mind: if you’re particularly sensitive to swaying, due to the boat’s slight movement, it might be worth checking the tides and weather before booking. That said, I should emphasize that you’d have to be extremely sensitive to notice any movement—it’s barely detectable.
Additionally, both times we went, the place was packed, and they do pack you in quite tightly with very little space between tables. If you’re someone who prefers a little more room, I’d recommend visiting earlier in the week rather than on the weekend. The menu is extensive, and we went for the fish both times. It was cooked to perfection and definitely worth it. Overall, Tiko’s provides a memorable dining experience with fantastic food, a lively atmosphere, and great service.
Raintree Lodge
Raintree Lodge Café offers live music and a simpler menu, but the surroundings are simply perfect, as the restaurant’s porch cantilevers over the lake, with small bags of fish food on the tables to feed the rich pool of fish below. Most of the time when we’re in Suva, we pop over, have a game of pool, enjoy a few drinks at the bar, and grab lunch. We haven’t been there for an evening meal yet, but since the change in management, we’ve heard the food is simply outstanding. If it’s better than before, then you’re in for a real treat. Quite simply, it’s an amazing venue for a casual meal, great for everyone.
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, Suva offers a rich variety of dining experiences that showcase authentic Fijian cuisine, reflecting the heart and soul of local food traditions. The chefs here are truly dedicated, using local spices and sauces to elevate each dish, making every meal an exciting journey for your taste buds. Whether you choose an upscale restaurant or a laid-back grill, you’re sure to experience the vibrant flavors of Fiji. Sometimes, in food as in life, less is more—and in Suva, it’s the simple, authentic dishes that leave the biggest impression.
