Fiji sevens men’s rugby team took gold in the Tokyo Olympics, and they defended their 2016 Rio title making them back-to-back champions! In 2021, Fiji beat new Zealand 27-12 in the gold medal match at Tokyo stadium. To continue this theme we have started to create a collection of the top 7 – venues, attractions, and places to eat across Fiji. With only 12 absolute beachfront rooms that boast uninterrupted ocean views, you’ll discover life is good at Matanivusi Beach Eco Resort.
The location is amazing. The buildings are nestled amongst the natural jungle along the shore of a pristine lagoon. Large amounts of glass and louvers, high-pitched roofs, and beachfront decks are features that allow the integration of the natural landscape with the living areas.
The rooms are tastefully decorated with warm timbers, a king-sized bed (or 2 king singles), mosquito nets for that tropical feel (all rooms are screened), a coffee table, and relaxing chairs. Air Conditioned rooms are available.
Matanivusi’s restaurant offers an eclectic fusion of Fijian, Indian and contemporary dishes using only the freshest ingredients. We strive at being a sustainable restaurant by using fruits grown around the property depending on the season, vegetables cultivated in the local villages, and fresh Yellowfin Tuna and Mahi Mahi from the daily catches brought in at Suva harbor.
The Restaurant and Bar have been designed with the intention of maximizing the view of the coral-fringed lagoon, whether you are enjoying fresh Trevally cooked in coconut cream or a Matanivusi Mai Tai. The ‘Dua Tali’ Bar (the ‘One Moore Bar’ – named in honor of a great friend – Marcus Moore) is a full-service bar with a wide variety of tropical concoctions for your delight. The Bar also has a selection of wine and beers, along with a full range of spirits and liqueurs.
We endeavor to have a yoga teacher on-site throughout the year. We offer a free daily class when teachers are available, catering to all levels.
Private sessions are also available upon request. Our beautiful yoga studio is built on an elevated wooden deck, overlooking the lush and sacred rainforest. Enjoy the calming sounds of the bush and feel the gentle wind grazing against your skin while flowing through your asanas.
The Surf in Fiji is world class as you know, but forget about Cloudbreak/Tavarua and come to Matanivusi for the best surf in Fiji without the crowds. Frigates on its day are just as good and will give you the wave of your life. With 22 years of surfing experience in this area of the Coral Coast, we know the surf breaks like the back of our hands and will get you to the best breaks at the right time every day. There is surf year-round in Fiji, but there are two different surf seasons. One is from April to October when the low-pressure systems in the Southern Hemisphere produce consistent ground swells which can get up to 8-10’ft (12-20ft faces for the Americans out there).
Matanivusi offers world-class kitesurfing down-winders, surf-kiting, flat-water kiting, surfing, and stand-up paddling. Each day is a different adventure on the water. Epic down-winders and reef breaks including Frigates and Fijian Pipe surround the area and cater to varying levels of experience although please note we do not cater to beginners. We have no kiting gear available. You must bring everything you need. We will provide the boats and knowledgeable staff to assist you, even with a safety boat to track your kiting expeditions and assist in launching and recovery.

Matanivusi, a perfect getaway
If the cat’s eye really is beautiful, then it’s Matanivusi. I had the opportunity to spend a weekend in late January 2021, and it was the resort’s beauty, excellent service, eco-friendly facilities, and ideal location that took me back for the second time.
The rooms are great as they all face out to the beachfront. The food and beverage are excellent and the resort staff is so hospitable. If you’re one that loves activities, well there’s a lot on offer at Matanivusi. But if you just want a relaxing time, a dip in the ocean and a quiet read under along the shady beachfront is what I’d recommend. The sunsets are amazing, and I’d recommend the tour 🙂
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Matanivusi. I’m told it has to do with the cat’s eye…so I’m definitely returning.
Glad you enjoyed one of the most stunning resorts that grace the Fijian Shoreline, we look forward to welcoming you back home in the near future. Vinaka Vakalevu
