Review: Laidback luxury at Vomo Island Fiji’s new Reef House
Clear waves lapping lazily against a shell-lined shore, a string hammock tied between two palms, and a freshly-opened coconut resting in the sand alongside, ready to be scooped up and enjoyed. This quintessential tropical scene may sound like a phone wallpaper, or perhaps the photo of the month on a calendar, but it’s actually the view from the breakfast table at Vomo Island – an all-inclusive Fijian hideaway that has welcomed travellers for almost 30 years.
Only 45 minutes by boat from Denarau Marina, the primary jump-off point for the Yasawa and Mamanuca chains leading west from the main island of Viti Levu, Vomo proudly ranks among the most luxurious resorts in the country. As anyone who’s visited the islands of Fiji can attest, their enduring appeal is more than just skin deep. The warm and genuine spirit of its people, not to mention the opportunities to learn from and meaningfully engage with those you meet, are its greatest treasure. Vomo is no exception.

THE REEF HOUSE: EXPERIENCE
Completed in December 2022, Reef House is palatial in fit-out and scale, welcoming 10 guests and staffed by a dedicated butler to ensure every holiday is as memorable as possible. Within the sprawling 100-meter-long footprint are five elegantly-furnished guest rooms – a spacious master at one end and four overlooking lush greenery at the other.
No expense has been spared in creating something as enchanting to look at as it is to spend time in. Divided between two freestanding buildings, the four guest rooms at the far side of the pool each features a separate entrance, ensuite, and outdoor day bed tailor-made for soaking up the sunshine. Inside you’ll find a comfortable king-size bed taking pride in place at its centre, a day lounge laden with pillows flanking one wall, and a stunning indoor and outdoor bathroom housing a deep soaking tub and rain shower.
At the heart of the residence is a full kitchen, butler’s pantry, and dining room, separated from an entertainment room by a large undercover lounge. Don’t let the kitchen worry you though – guests aren’t expected to BYO. Full resort access is all part of the deal, including all-inclusive meals at restaurants, plus a well-stocked fridge of soft drinks and water. Alcoholic drinks can be purchased also.
In-residence dining can also be arranged by your dedicated butler, be it a la carte breakfast, a delicious cheese platter, freshly-cut fruit, or a charcuterie board to graze on by the pool. But the star of the show has to be the 25-meter infinity edge swimming pool. It’s gorgeous, particularly in the late afternoon when the setting sun sets the area ablaze in golden light. Congratulations to our latest Certified PADI Bubblemakers
Congratulations to these three champs on the island who have completed the PADI Bubblemaker course program under the watchful eye of our legendary diver, Vili! It’s an incredible achievement to begin to learn and master scuba diving at such a young age, and we couldn’t be more proud of you.
The PADI Bubblemaker course program is specifically designed for children aged 8-12 and introduces them to the world of scuba diving in a fun and safe environment. The program includes a pool session where kids learn basic scuba diving skills and practice breathing underwater. (Parents/guardians can watch stress-free poolside with a cocktail in hand). Global Recycling Day Initiative – Water Bottling Plant
As we approach Global Recycling Day on March 18th, it is more important than ever to highlight the importance of sustainable practices and the reduction of single-use plastics. At Vomo Island Fiji, we take this responsibility seriously and are committed to doing our part in preserving the environment for generations to come.
One of the ways we are working towards a more sustainable future is through our state-of-the-art water bottling plant. Our plant produces pure still and sparkling drinking water that is treated to the highest international standards and bottled in our own VOMO recycled glass bottles. By using recycled glass bottles, we are drastically reducing the need for single-use plastic bottles, which can take hundreds of years to decompose and often end up polluting our oceans and natural habitats. Dessert inspired by the 2023 Pantone Color of the Year
This stunningly beautiful Beetroot Parfait, created with joy by Chef Pritesh, is a vibrant and delicious dessert that offers an artistic interpretation of this year’s Pantone® Color of the Year, Viva Magenta. The parfait features creamy frozen yogurt, rich blackberry beetroot gel, delicately sculpted sugar toffee, and raspberry meringue. Artistically divine to the eyes and tastebuds. The dish is beautifully presented, with the beetroot’s deep red hues contrasting against the sprinkling of fresh raspberries and crisp white meringue.

The story of Flip, Flop, and Oh-Jo – Turtle Conservation on VOMO
Three baby turtles washed ashore one year ago, as a special Christmas present to VOMO. These tiny turtles were just babies and were discovered on the shore by the Ocean Play crew on 21st December 2021.
We placed them in salt water in a plastic tub and started to care for them at Ocean Play. The Kids from the Kids Club helped to name them and so they were christened Flip, Flop, and Oh-Jo. It’s now one year on and the triplets will be celebrating their first birthday with us. They now measure around 24/60 cm inches in length.
Our Marine Biologist Laisenia has been taking the turtles out regularly for a swim in the ocean to exercise them and get them used to their natural habitat before being released.
A few weeks ago, one of the turtles ‘escaped’ and swam away. Everyone was upset that Flip was gone. We searched frantically but could not find him. However, the following morning, Flip came home. He swam ashore at EXACTLY the same spot as he went missing. He was unharmed and doing well and now we are more careful when exercising the trio, so we don’t lose them!
Soon we will be moving the turtles to a larger tank to finish growing to adult size, first ensuring they are fit for life on the house reef of VOMO. We are hopeful they will hang around their ancestral home and forever be part of the VOMO family. Full and Original Story
