Destination Overview
The Yasawa Group is a chain of 20 volcanic islands renowned for their rugged hilly landscapes, dazzling beaches, and striking blue lagoons. A favorite destination for tourists visiting Fiji, these pristine islands stretch roughly 90 km from north to south in a near-straight line. Situated north of the Mamanuca Group and 40 km northwest of Viti Levu, the Yasawa Group is sparsely populated, providing a secluded and tranquil ambiance.
The Yasawa Group of Islands (pronounced Yah-sow-wah) completes the majestic arc of islands north of Viti Levu, adjacent to the idyllic Mamanuca archipelago. Due to their geographical location, the Yasawa Islands have avoided heavy commercialization and have remained true to Fijian traditions, steeped in history and folklore. Made famous when the romantic movie The Blue Lagoon was filmed here in the 1980s on Turtle Island, the Yasawas today is a tourist hotspot

Stories from the Past
The Legend of Mantaray Island – In the time before time, a great warrior named Buli Balavu ruled the island of Naviti, which was once a solitary island. The island, renowned for its beauty, was home to many animals and insects. However, disputes over ownership led to war, with Gata, the snake, becoming one of the fiercest fighters. He gradually pushed the other creatures toward the southern tip of the island. Seeing the conflict, Buli Balavu decided to break up his beloved island to protect the creatures from Gata. He fired an arrow at the island, splitting it into four—Naviti, Drawaqa, Naukacuvu, and Nanuya Balavu, which is now home to Mantaray Island Resort. The mark where he knelt to fire his arrow can still be seen today at Otoculu beach.
The ants were left stranded on the same island as Gata. Unable to swim, they were in danger, and the turtles (Vonu) heard their cries for help. The turtles ferried them across the waters, but eventually had to dive, leaving the ants floating. The manta ray (Vai), offered to help, and the octopus (Sulua), guided the ants the rest of the way to safety at the northern tip of Mantaray Island, Korosamoa Point. Sulua returned to the sea, where she spoke to Vai and the turtles: “Vai, your selflessness has earned you the right to visit these waters whenever you like. And, Vonu, for your bravery, you may always come to this island to lay your eggs in peace.”
Millennia have passed, but Vai are still seen around Korosamoa, Sulua remains in the reef, and Vonu are often found swimming in the channel. The ants continue to live near the point, but there are no snakes to be found. The “tentacle prints” Sulua left in the rocks when she carried the ants to safety are still visible today.
