Fun Fact 1: Aerobatic Skills
The fantails is their remarkable agility and aerobatic skills. These small birds are known for their distinctive fan-shaped tail that they constantly flick and spread open, which helps them maneuver swiftly and gracefully through dense vegetation while hunting insects. Their acrobatic flight and constant tail movement not only aid in catching prey but also serve as a form of communication and display, making them delightful and captivating to observe in their natural habitats.

Kadavu Fantail
The Kadavu Fantail is a common forest bird found only on Kadavu, where it lives in tropical moist lowland forests, especially along waterways. It has mouse-brown upperparts, white underparts, a brown head, white throat, black breast band and a white stripe behind the eye. Curious by nature, it often greets forest visitors with drooped wings, a fanned tail and a scolding call.

Streaked Fantail
The Streaked Fantail is a small bird with warm brown plumage, a long often-fanned tail, a short white eyebrow and variably streaked white underparts. Found in forested areas and edges, it usually avoids open spaces. Birds on Taveuni show less streaking than those found in other parts of Fiji.

Natewa Silktail
The Natewa Silktail is a small, stub-tailed bird endemic to the forests of Vanua Levu’s Natewa Peninsula. Mostly dark, it has velvety black plumage with electric-blue speckling on the chest, back, head, crown and breast. Males also have a silky white lower-back patch, while females and immature birds are less glossy. It lives in mature wet rainforest, forest patches, logged forest and plantations near natural forest.

Taveuni Silktail
The Taveuni Silktail is a small bird native to Fiji’s Taveuni Island. It has velvety black plumage with metallic blue speckling on the crown and breast, while the male also has a silky white patch extending from the lower back down the tail. It lives mainly in mature wet rainforest and forest patches, but can also be found in logged forests and plantations near natural forest.
