On June 19th, Fiji took a significant step towards securing a sustainable tourism future with the launch of its National Sustainable Tourism Framework, a comprehensive 10-year strategy aimed at guiding the country’s tourism sector towards long-term sustainability. Replacing the previous Fijian Tourism 2021 plan, this new framework is anchored around the theme “Navigating Toward a Sustainable Tourism Future” and includes a detailed three-year action plan. It sets clear goals to balance economic prosperity with environmental conservation, community well-being, and the preservation of Fiji’s rich cultural heritage.
Goals and Vision of Fiji National Sustainable Tourism Framework
The vision behind the National Sustainable Tourism Framework is bold and far-reaching: “By 2034, our sustainable, thriving, and inclusive tourism sector will promote community wellbeing, provide equitable opportunities, and restore and protect our unique cultural heritage and biodiversity.” Aligned with the broader 2030 Pacific Sustainable Tourism Policy Framework, the document sets out four key objectives that will steer Fiji’s tourism sector over the next decade. The framework has been developed through a collaborative process, involving extensive consultations with stakeholders from government, industry, academia, financial institutions, and international development partners, including the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
At the launch event in Suva, Prime Minister Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka underscored the importance of the framework in fostering a prosperous economy while safeguarding Fiji’s environment and supporting its local communities. He emphasized that the success of this initiative would require the active participation and cooperation of all sectors, including the private sector, civil society, academics, and international partners. “This is not just a strategy but a collective commitment to ensuring that Fiji’s tourism sector grows in harmony with our culture and environment,” said Prime Minister Rabuka, highlighting the shared responsibility for achieving the framework’s ambitious goals.
