Even in Fiji’s towns and urban areas, pigeons and doves are a familiar and welcome sight. They move easily through streets, gardens, and green spaces, adding a natural presence to everyday life and reminding visitors that wildlife is never far away. Their continued presence highlights the value of trees, parks, and urban vegetation, which allow these birds to live alongside people. Maintaining these spaces helps ensure that Fiji’s urban environments remain lively, balanced, and connected to the surrounding natural landscape.
Fun Fact 1: Drinking Water Anybody
Pigeons and doves are among the few bird species capable of drinking water by sucking it up, rather than tilting their heads back to swallow. This unique ability is facilitated by a special muscular pouch in their esophagus called the “crop,” which allows them to drink efficiently from shallow water sources.
