1. Choose the right Fiji arrival airport
Fiji has two airports described as international, but they do not play the same role.

Do not choose an airport only because its city name looks closer on a map. Compare the complete ground or domestic-air transfer to your accommodation. If your resort is in the Mamanuca or Yasawa Islands, landing at Nausori usually adds unnecessary travel across Viti Levu before you can reach the western ports.
2. Start with your final destination, not your departure airport
Work backwards from the place where you will sleep on your first night. Your international arrival time can determine whether you catch the last boat, domestic flight or resort transfer of the day.
- Denarau, Nadi and the Mamanuca Islands: Nadi is normally the clear choice.
- Yasawa Islands: choose a Nadi arrival that leaves enough time for your booked vessel, seaplane or resort transfer.
- Coral Coast and Pacific Harbour: Nadi is commonly the most practical gateway, but allow for the road journey.
- Suva: compare a through itinerary to Nausori with a Nadi arrival followed by a road or domestic connection.
- Savusavu, Labasa, Taveuni and Kadavu: plan the international and domestic sectors together and check the domestic baggage rules.
Visitor advisory: do not assume a same-day island connection will still be available if your international flight is delayed. Obtain the transfer operator’s latest check-in time before booking the flight.
3. Find the strongest gateway from your region
Fiji Airways and partner airlines connect Nadi with major gateways around the Pacific. Frequencies and seasonal operations change, so use the live airline schedule when you book. The following routing patterns are the most useful starting points.

The fastest route may vary by travel date. A slightly longer first flight can produce a shorter total journey if it connects cleanly with the Nadi service.
4. Prefer one ticket when connections are involved
A protected through itinerary normally places the connecting flights under one booking. If the first sector is disrupted, the ticketing airline has a clearer responsibility to rebook the onward journey. Checked baggage may also be tagged through, although you must still follow any customs and baggage-collection rules at the connecting airport.
Separate tickets can sometimes reduce the fare, but they transfer most of the risk to you. If the first flight is late and you miss the second ticket, the onward airline may treat you as a no-show. You may also need to collect luggage, clear immigration, change terminals and check in again.
If you deliberately use separate tickets, allow a substantial buffer and consider an overnight stop. Never build a tight self-transfer simply because a flight-search website displays it as possible.
5. Compare total journey time, not only flight time
A route with one connection can be better than a direct flight on the wrong day, but only if the connection is sensible. Compare:
- door-to-door journey time, including the trip to your departure airport;
- number of stops and terminal changes;
- overnight layovers and hotel costs;
- airport transit or entry requirements;
- the time you land in Fiji; and
- the likelihood of reaching your final transfer that day.
A fare that saves a small amount but adds ten hours, a hotel night and a risky self-transfer is rarely the better value.
6. Check the fare family and baggage before paying
Fiji Airways uses different fare families, and baggage or change conditions vary by route and fare. A Lite fare can be suitable for a traveller with cabin baggage only, while Value, Comfort or Plus may include checked baggage and greater flexibility. Allowances on Fiji Link domestic services can be lower than on long-haul international flights.
Before payment, open the fare rules and confirm:
- cabin baggage dimensions and weight;
- checked baggage pieces and maximum weight;
- fees for changes, cancellation or no-show;
- seat selection and meal inclusions;
- sports equipment, diving equipment, surfboards or infant items; and
- whether the domestic sector recognises an international through allowance.
Compare the final price after every item you genuinely need has been added. Baggage entitlements can differ by market, route, aircraft and ticket, so the allowance printed on your booking is the one that matters.
7. Check the arrival date carefully when crossing the International Date Line
Long-haul travel across the Pacific can change the calendar date. A flight leaving North America may arrive in Fiji two calendar dates later, while the return journey can appear to arrive on the same date it departed.
Use the local arrival date shown on the confirmed itinerary when booking accommodation, airport pickup, boats and domestic flights. Do not calculate it yourself from the duration alone. This is one of the easiest ways to book the wrong first hotel night
8. Leave enough time for your Fiji connection
International arrivals must complete immigration, collect baggage where required and clear customs before continuing. Queues, weather and delayed baggage can extend the process. If the onward trip is on a separate ticket or with an independent transfer company, add a larger buffer than the minimum shown by a booking engine.
For a domestic flight, ferry, seaplane or private resort transfer, ask the operator for its required check-in time and missed-transfer policy. If the last connection is early, plan your first night on Viti Levu and continue the following morning. Starting the holiday rested is better than building the entire first day around a connection with no margin.
9. Book at the right time and compare dates
There is no single guaranteed cheapest day to book a flight to Fiji. Prices respond to demand, school holidays, major events, operating frequency and how many seats remain in each fare class.
A practical search method is:
- Check a flexible-date calendar around your preferred departure and return dates.
- Compare direct flights with one-stop through itineraries.
- Price the same itinerary on the operating airline’s website.
- Add baggage, seats, card fees, hotels and transfer costs.
- Check the change and cancellation terms before paying.
For Christmas, New Year, Easter, Australian and New Zealand school holidays, and other peak periods, search early. If your dates are fixed, waiting for a sale can leave you with a worse schedule or a higher fare.
10. Complete a final flight check before booking
Before entering payment details, confirm every part of the itinerary against this list:
- Passenger names match the travel documents exactly.
- The arrival airport is NAN or SUV as intended.
- The local arrival date and time match the first night’s accommodation.
- Every connection is either protected on one ticket or has a safe self-transfer buffer.
- The baggage allowance covers the international and domestic sectors.
- Transit visas or electronic travel authorities have been checked for every connecting country.
- The fare rules provide enough flexibility for your circumstances.
- The onward boat, road transfer or domestic flight can still be reached after arrival formalities.
- Travel insurance will begin before departure and cover the full itinerary.
- The live airline schedule and any travel alerts have been checked.
