Visitor Advisory
Backpackers & Hostels
In today’s world, everyone carries powerful devices in their pockets—smartphones that are more advanced than the technology used during the first moon landing. These devices can be worth anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand dollars, not to mention the additional gear like GoPros and laptops. For this reason, it is crucial never to leave these items unattended in your rooms or public areas. Even the most trustworthy individuals can be tempted.
To keep your belongings safe, consider using the reception area’s safe to store your valuables. However, be aware that reception may only be open during certain hours, and the owners may not always be available. Planning ahead is key to ensuring your items are secure. For those who prefer a simpler approach, consider carrying an older phone without a touchscreen solely for making calls. When it comes to laptops, opting for a more affordable model can help mitigate the impact of loss or damage during your trip.
Finally, remember that Fiji is about experiences. Consider bringing an old camera and a couple of rolls of film to capture memories without the distractions of modern technology. Embrace the beauty of the islands and enjoy your adventure!

FJ Experiences
South Seas Private Hotel
The South Seas Private Hotel is a budget accommodation option that offers a unique experience for travelers seeking a taste of local culture. Although it may only receive a one-star rating, this reflects its limited amenities rather than a lack of charm. Reminiscent of a youth hostel in the United Kingdom, it features a communal kitchen for guests to prepare their own meals and clean shared bathrooms, though wearing flip-flops is advised. A notable inconvenience is the lack of electrical outlets in the rooms, with only two available on the ground floor, often occupied. Popular among locals, the hotel has a vibrant atmosphere, and many guests stay for extended periods due to its convenient location near workplaces and local attractions.
The staff at South Seas are known for their helpful and down-to-earth demeanor, creating a welcoming environment. The constant flow of new faces in the lounge and reception area offers ample opportunities for social interaction, making it an ideal spot for those who enjoy meeting people. While the owners do not actively advertise or maintain a significant online presence, they have cultivated a solid clientele of both local and international guests, primarily those on business or short stopovers. Potential visitors should not be deterred by the lack of information available online.
In summary, while South Seas Private Hotel lacks certain amenities such as private bathrooms and sufficient electrical outlets, it is exceptionally clean and features charming, old Fijian-style architecture. It is a favorite choice for our team, who appreciate its simple, unpretentious atmosphere. Its prime location, just 200 meters from the Grand Pacific Hotel and Albert Park, underscores the adage “location, location, location.” For independent travelers seeking a genuine South Pacific experience, South Seas Private Hotel offers an inviting atmosphere. With 42 rooms–including single, twin/double, family/triple, and multi-bed options–all equipped with fans, insect screens, bed linens, and maid service, it caters to a variety of needs. Notably, there is one room with a private bathroom, while all other rooms share communal facilities. Security is a priority, with a guard on duty at night to check IDs and ensure the safety of guests. Overall, South Seas Private Hotel provides a clean and basic lodging option for those looking to immerse themselves in the local culture while enjoying the simplicity of travel.

Colonial Lodge
I stayed at the Colonial Lodge for about two weeks when I first arrived in Fiji for volunteer work. This lodge is a popular choice among overseas universities and volunteer organizations due to its “home away from home” appeal. The host offers an evening meal upon request, and the communal living spaces—including a lovely living room, kitchen, and porch area—create a warm atmosphere. The sleeping arrangements are basic, with a honeycomb layout of hallways leading to various dormitories and a few small single bedrooms on the ground floor.
Colonial Lodge is a great place to meet locals and make new friends. Unlike the South Sea Private Hotel, it offers modern conveniences but comes with more rules, as it serves both as a family home and a backpackers’ lodge. Imagine it as one big family home, where guidelines are in place to ensure the well-being of both guests and the family. Overall, it’s a welcoming place that balances comfort with a sense of community.
Additionally, I remember there was a private outbuilding just off the driveway that the family used to rent out to long-term volunteers. Although I never met the person living there at the time, they offered me the place when I left. If you enjoy your stay and plan to be in the city for several months, I recommend inquiring about this option. You could do far worse than living with this family. While you do have some privacy, it’s not complete, as the porch overlooks the entrance directly.

Rainforest Eco Resort
This resort has become a recurring escape for travelers seeking a break from the daily grind of city life. Just a short taxi ride of 5 to 10 minutes will take visitors to the national park forest area, and the resort itself is beautifully situated right on the lake. Upon entering the resort, guests often find their worries and concerns melting away as they settle in, order a nice meal, and enjoy the stunning natural surroundings.
During their winter stay, the team found the rooms adjacent to the lake significantly damp, so they recommend booking accommodations further up the hill for better views and less moisture. Despite this issue, they still endorse the resort as a great weekend escape. However, while it’s a lovely place for a night or two with friends and family—especially with the excellent meals and live bands/events throughout the year—they do not recommend it for a longer stay in Fiji. Overall, it’s a delightful spot to relax and reconnect with nature before returning to the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Final Thoughts
Although the team has not officially stayed at all the properties mentioned, they visited and explored each one. They observed that the more one spends, the more the authentic Fijian appeal tends to diminish. It is understandable that as individuals reach a certain level in life, staying in backpackers and hostels may lose their charm. The comforts of modern amenities, such as en-suite bathrooms, often outweigh the social interactions found in simpler accommodations.
Functionality also has its place, and it can sometimes take precedence. Depending on the reasons for traveling to Suva and the items one is bringing, it’s essential to choose accommodations wisely. The security of belongings and the presence of a solid reception and sturdy door in three-star properties may be more reassuring. Occasionally, it might be worthwhile to take a risk and rough it with fewer possessions. Conversely, if one is only visiting Suva once, opting for the high-quality services of four or five-star properties can be beneficial, as cultural experiences tend to re-emerge when paying for more luxurious lodging.
In summary, Suva offers everything needed in terms of a range of accommodations. Choosing appropriately for one’s circumstances will likely lead to a satisfying experience. Most options are centrally located, eliminating the need for extensive transportation to get around.
