According to Westpac Fiji’s Head of Global Transaction Solutions, Yvonne Breckterfield, taxi operators have welcomed the change, recognising the increasing demand for digital payments.
“Drivers were enthusiastic about the ability to accept payments via POS, recognising how quickly the payment industry has evolved. They noted that tourists no longer carry cash, and accepting digital payments not only aligns with this shift but also enhances safety, as handling cash could make them more vulnerable to theft,” Breckterfield said.
Taxi operators at Nadi International Airport and Nausori Airport were the first to receive the new payment terminals, with a broader rollout scheduled for later this year.
“The initial rollout was conducted with a core group of 22 taxis, primarily from Yellow Taxis in Nadi and Nausori. We plan to extend implementation to all Yellow Taxis in the coming months with support from Fiji Airports Ltd,” she added.
Among the first to benefit was Faraaz Mustapha from Nadi Airport Taxi Services. “The ability to accept card payments came at the perfect time, just one week before our busiest period. The new system allowed us to seamlessly accept payments during a major conference partnership, adding convenience for our guests and opening up an entirely new revenue stream. The new terminals have streamlined our operations and given us a real competitive edge. We’re genuinely grateful for Westpac’s continued partnership and support,” Mustapha said.
Mastercard’s Country Manager for New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, Ruth Riviere, also welcomed the collaboration, stating, “Mastercard is proud to partner with Westpac to expand digital payments in Fiji, enabling taxi drivers to accept cards for the first time. This marks another milestone in our long-standing commitment to bringing more people and businesses in the Pacific into the digital economy. Together, we’re modernising Fiji’s payment ecosystem, improving customer experiences, and empowering local businesses to grow.”
This partnership reflects Westpac and Mastercard’s shared commitment to driving digital innovation and enhancing financial inclusion. By making secure, contactless transactions more accessible, Westpac continues to support local businesses and communities across Fiji.
