Fiji has been selected as one of National Geographic’s Best of the World destinations for 2026, highlighting its breathtaking beauty, rich culture, and immersive travel experiences.
No place encapsulates the South Pacific like Fiji. Its 300-plus islands are surrounded by some of the world’s most incredible coral reefs, its lush peaks and waterfalls make it a day hiker’s paradise, and Fijians are renowned for their warm hospitality. Fiji has also become a destination for those looking to give back while they kick back, with resorts offering programs that encourage guests to spend part of their vacation contributing to conservation and community projects. The state tourism agency promotes Loloma Hour—loloma means “to act with generosity, driven by love”—a happy-hour alternative with volunteer shifts instead of cocktails.
Guests at the family-friendly Plantation Island Resort on Malolo Lailai Island might plant coral during a snorkeling adventure. On adjacent Malolo Island, Likuliku Lagoon Resort recently opened a conservation center, arranging outings to plant native trees, cull invasive species, and protect the critically endangered Fiji crested iguana.
When visitors aren’t engaged in voluntouring, there are still plenty of ways to relax and enjoy the islands. In August, some of the planet’s best surfers line up at the legendary Cloudbreak, off the little islands of Namotu and Tavarua, a stop on the World Surf League’s 2026 championship tour. Even if surfing isn’t your thing, a 20-minute boat ride from Namotu Island Resort takes guests to the floating bar Cloud 9, in the waters of Vanua Malolo on the Ro Ro Reef, where cocktails and snorkeling await.
Fiji also offers opportunities to explore the BULA Reef and discover islands like Monuriki, featured in TV shows and movies. With its combination of natural beauty, cultural richness, and community-focused experiences, Fiji stands out as a destination that inspires visitors to connect with both nature and the local community.
Dr. Paresh Pant, Chief Executive Officer of Tourism Fiji, said, “Accolades like this reaffirm Fiji’s place among the world’s most inspiring destinations and help strengthen global awareness, encouraging more travellers to experience our islands. This recognition celebrates not only our islands’ breathtaking beauty but also the warmth, culture, and spirit of our people that make every visitor feel at home.”
