Among those present were Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism & Civil Aviation, Hon. Viliame Gavoka, Permanent Secretary of Tourism & Civil Aviation, Salaseini Daunabuna, and other key industry leaders. They spent their morning break on Friday, September 27th, participating in a tree-planting initiative at The Sheraton Farm, led by Marriott International’s leadership team, including Mr. Silvano Dressino, Acting Multi-Property Vice President for Pacific Islands and General Manager of Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay.
The event was part of this year’s World Tourism Day theme, ‘Tourism and Peace,’ and featured the planting of grafted lime, mulberry, and soursop trees. The initiative symbolized the importance of local produce, sustainable practices, and the vital connection between tourism and the environment. The tree-planting took place at the resort’s 5-acre Sheraton Fiji Farm, underscoring the ongoing efforts to promote sustainable farming and eco-friendly practices. The farm not only supports the resort’s culinary offerings but also provides a valuable educational experience for guests, while benefiting local farmers.
Mr. Dressino commented, “Tourism plays a critical role in the local economy, and hosting the Fiji Tourism Convention at one of our Fijian-owned properties gives us an opportunity to showcase new experiences, such as the Sheraton Farm, which has been enhanced since our reopening.” He added, “This tree-planting initiative, led by the Hon. Deputy Prime Minister and other key stakeholders, reinforces our commitment to strengthening community connections and advancing sustainable practices.”
Guests at the resorts are encouraged to participate in guided farm tours, where they can learn about sustainable farming techniques such as hydroponics and organic cultivation, including hands-on activities like planting tree saplings. This aligns with the resort’s goal of planting 3,000 native and fruit trees each year.
Located on Denarau Island, Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort and Sheraton Denarau Villas are renowned for their exceptional hospitality, luxurious accommodations, and dedication to sustainable tourism. Along with other Marriott International properties in Fiji, including Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay and Sheraton Resort & Spa Tokoriki Island Fiji, these resorts offer travelers a perfect combination of relaxation, adventure, and cultural immersion, further cementing Fiji’s status as a premier global destination.
