Getting Your Bearings
Denarau Island, the vibrant heart of Fiji tourism, offers everything you’ve ever dreamed of and more. This enchanting island, nestled among swaying palm trees and pristine sandy beaches, features world-class resorts, restaurants, and entertainment options, making it feel larger than life. Denarau, a name derived from the Fijian phrase “dede na raurau,” originally described an area prone to accumulating debris. Before its transformation into a bustling tourist hotspot, the region was characterized by mangroves, swamps, and mud flats. Development began in 1969 with an American developer’s master plan, leading to the opening of the first luxury hotel, now the Westin, in 1975. This was followed by the arrival of other major hotels, including the Sheraton in 1987 and several five-star resorts in the 1990s.
The most significant changes occurred between 1988 and 1993, when the Japanese developer EIE International Corporation undertook extensive construction. This initiative involved clearing land, reclaiming swamps, and heavily investing in infrastructure. Today, Denarau boasts a stunning golf course, shopping malls, tennis courts, and a bustling marina. Just a 20-minute drive from Nadi Airport, this exclusive resort enclave offers opportunities for indulgence at any of its nine family-friendly resorts. Visitors can spend leisurely days on the 18-hole championship golf course or explore the vibrant Port Denarau marina complex. Connected to Nadi by a convenient causeway, Denarau caters to every traveler’s needs with a diverse range of accommodations.
What sets Denarau apart are its exceptional features, including award-winning spas for those seeking relaxation and numerous kids’ clubs along with Fiji’s exclusive land-based water park for family fun. The island also serves as a dynamic hub for conferences and weddings, backed by expert event planners. With easy access to exciting excursions and island-hopping adventures from Port Denarau, this island truly is a haven of luxury and entertainment waiting to be discovered.

Additional Information
Denarau’s development involved extensive land reclamation, including removing mangroves, which historically protected against erosion and storms. The Denarau brand logo features two herons, one sitting and the other poised for flight, symbolizing relaxation and activity. However, this symbol is more historical than contemporary, as the large expanses of mangroves have been removed, and herons are no longer seen in the area. The course of the Nadi River was altered during the project, and an extensive area of tidal flats was dredged to build the marina’s harbor. The 900,000 cubic meters of dredged materials were then used as landfill for the site where the Hilton was later constructed. (United Nations, 2013)
