In Depth
The Grand Pacific Hotel Suva marked World Cancer Day on Wednesday, 4 February by lighting its façade in the official orange and blue colours of the global campaign. The initiative, led internationally by the Union for International Cancer Control, is observed annually on 4 February and unites communities worldwide in raising awareness about cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, and care. The hotel first joined the landmark lighting initiative in 2022 and has continued its participation each year as a visible show of solidarity with those affected by cancer, highlighting Fiji’s involvement in a movement spanning hundreds of landmarks across cities and countries.
The landmark lighting was organised in partnership with the Fiji Cancer Society and supported by the Grand Pacific Hotel Suva, which hosted the event and provided venue support and light refreshments for invited guests, community representatives, and members of the media. In addition to the lighting, the FNPF-owned IHG Hotels in Fiji extended their support through Cup of Kindness, a monthly community initiative delivered across InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa, Grand Pacific Hotel Suva, and Holiday Inn Suva. Under this programme, 100 percent of proceeds from nominated coffee sales are donated to local organisations and causes that provide direct community benefit.
In January 2026, Cup of Kindness supported the Fiji Cancer Society during Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, held from 19 to 26 January, with a dedicated coffee sale on Friday, 23 January. A second Cup of Kindness coffee sale was scheduled for Friday, 6 February, following World Cancer Day. According to Doreen Huon, Cluster Director of Sales & Marketing at IHG Hotels & Resorts, landmark lighting makes cancer awareness visible within the community, while initiatives like Cup of Kindness allow the organisation to support the Fiji Cancer Society and engage guests and teams in meaningful causes. Together, the two Cup of Kindness events are expected to raise approximately $5,000 to support the Fiji Cancer Society’s education, awareness, and patient support programmes across Fiji, with Regional General Manager Lachlan Walker noting that the combined efforts demonstrate support for organisations delivering essential health services and awareness programmes.
